Sue McLeod
Sue McLeod grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, where she obtained a B.Sc degree and Secondary Teacher's Diploma at the University of Cape Town. Her working career included medical research and teaching. It wasn't until moving to the UK in 1989 that she was able to develop her love of drawing and painting.
Sue initially concentrated on botanical painting and in 2005; she was awarded a silver medal for her series on Iris germanica at an RHS exhibition in London.
Since moving to Shropshire in 2006, she has extended her repertoire to include animals, having been inspired by the rare breed sheep kept by friends in Shropshire. In addition, she is now giving tuition, holding one-day watercolour workshops, as well as short courses in drawing. The subject matter for the workshops includes both plants and animals.
Including paintings, Sue has a series of 12 botanical greetings cards and 4 Limited Edition Prints for sale. A brochure and order form can be obtained by contacting her by e-mail.
Teachings Since July 2008, after receiving requests for tuition, I have been holding one-day watercolour workshops on painting animals. The aim of the workshops has been to demonstrate the use of different watercolour techniques to achieve specific effects.
The course is for students of all abilities and includes general watercolour techniques, use of light and tone for 3D effects, as well as an approach to fur, feathers and fleece. The groups are small, between 6-10 students, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
The drawing course is about learning 'how to see', i.e. developing skills of perception, as well as learning pencil and pen techniques. In addition, the course is designed to enable students to have an informed approach to drawing specific subjects, e.g. portraits and landscapes. Of course, developing skills in perception and drawing helps unlock the creative side of the brain and increases artistic ability.
